If you've ever sought out tips for learning a skill—any skill, really—one of the first pieces of advice you were likely exposed to was some variation of the 'less is more' argument. In other words, you were told the best approach to learning is to practice regularly in short bursts, as opposed to sitting with it for hours at a time.
This is good advice, and there's some science behind it being a better strategy for cementing progress.
One of the more lauded benefits of this approach is that it reduces the risk of burnout. For most of us, throwing ourselves at something we're not very good at (yet!) is inherently frustrating. The longer the session, the more opportunities we have to get frustrated ... and the more frustrated we get, the less likely we are to get back on the horse. There's also the issue of time constraints. Regardless of how often, it's far easier to commit to ten minutes than it is to an hour.
On paper, it's a great strategy. But it's not without its flaws.
Ten minutes is still plenty of time to get frustrated, and if you're doing it every day, that means you're frustrated by it on a daily basis. Whether it's better or not, that's a pretty hard sell. But don't count it out just yet!
Rolling in from Writer's Connect newsletter 81 like waves of a soft spring wind, here are some tips for getting (and staying) productive with your writing.
All play and no work makes your book not happen!
This post brought to you by guest blogger Tyrone Couch.
I Don't Wanna!
It is grossly, egregiously easy to just not do something, and we monkeys are frighteningly good at convincing ourselves to do so. The extent to which we struggle with it varies from person to person, but for many of us, no amount of, "Yay! I did it!" is enough to persuade us to keep doing it.
We've established that it's hard. We've established that as much as we want to do it ... we don't really want to do it.
So for those of us for whom this is true, how do we push past it and get the damn thing written?
Know Your Time
There's a certain rhythm to the way our days unfold. Work and family commitments have varying levels of predictability, but even in the more fluid and uncertain configurations, there are no shortage of moments in a day where you have the opportunity to ask yourself, "What now?"
Problem is, many of us automatically answer this question for ourselves in advance, often without even realising it. It might look something like this:
"I'll get home, do the dishes, and then I can finally relax."
"After the kids go to bed, I'm done for the day."
"It was a big week, so I'll just get the shopping out of the way and then hang out at home."
There are so many demands in our lives that the moment their incessant nagging quiets, we resolve ourselves to do nothing. We tell ourselves it's necessary to do nothing, or else how will we face all the somethings we have to do tomorrow?
Here's the truth. Those moments of nothing? They are pregnant with possibility. By consigning them to the void, you will never do more than just get by—and you'll certainly never finish that manuscript.
Bring awareness to your nothing, for that nothing is not nothing at all: it's your most precious resource. It's time.
If your nothing is reading a book, then allocate yourselves a few chapters, then disengage. If it's your phone, set a timer and then put it down. If it's television, give yourself a few episodes, and then turn it off. In those moments, ask yourself, "What now?"
That's your moment. The transition between nothing and something, or something and nothing.
That's when you write.
The Racket
I've left out something terribly important, haven't I?
This whole conversation started with the admission that the process of writing is frustrating, and frequently unpleasant. We've given a sort of answer to the when, but glossed right over the how.
How do we consciously make the decision to do something when we'd much rather do nothing?
Well ... that's awfully wrapped up in the why, which very much depends on you. What is your personal incentive to write, or at the very least, to have written?
The reason we do anything at all is because we want it to amount to something. We do in the hope that the doing will serve us in some way ... and therein lies the the artist's lament. Many of us who do, do so in the knowledge that it may not amount to very much at all.
To find your how, figure out your why and hold onto it for dear life. Prepare yourself for the possibility, even likelihood, that your why may never be fully realised, and find a way to be okay with that.
If you can do that much, you can find ten minutes in a day to write.
Thanks For Coming
Well, that got more philosophical than I'd intended!
But seriously, the beauty of allocating a small amount of time every day or so is that all too often, it blossoms into more. Sure, some days, you might not even make it through the allocated ten minutes ... but what does that matter if the next time you try, you end up writing for hours?
Should you find yourself in need of more sage advice, tips, and tricks, our lovingly-crafted book coaching & writing programs are certain to fill in the gaps in your practice.

Word of the Day
wastrel (n.) wā′strəl
A wastrel is a person with a tendency to be wasteful with their time and resources, e.g., someone who is lazy and spends money on unnecessary things.
Her father was a wastrel, often failing to show up for work and gambling away the family's savings.
Quotidian Quote
"This is how you do it: you sit down at the keyboard and you put one word after another until it’s done. It's that easy, and that hard." ~ Neil Gaiman
